LMC - YOUNG PEOPLE’S DAY
Young People’s Day at the Leicester Music Conference is a free careers and skills event for 14–18 year olds interested in working in music and the creative industries. Through talks, demonstrations and hands-on activities, participants can meet artists, producers, educators and industry organisations, explore different roles across the sector, and gain practical insight into how people build sustainable careers. The day is designed to make pathways into music clearer, more realistic and more accessible, whether attendees are performers, creators or interested in behind-the-scenes roles.
Ayeshah George, professionally known as Zola Steelpan, is a UK-based steelpan soloist, performer, and music producer.
In 2025 the Leicester Music Conference Young People’s Day welcomed over 200 young people, and in 2026 we are expanding the event across two venues.
Supported by partners including the Leicester Music Board, HQ CAN, Leicestershire Music and Technology in Music Education UK (TiME), the Young People’s Day gives 14–18 year olds practical insight into careers across the music industry, helping them understand pathways, build confidence and identify their next steps. The 2026 programme is supported by funding from Arts Council England and the Institute of Leadership.

Taking place at 2Funky Music Complex and The Venue@DMU on Thursday, 26 February 2026, sessions such as Routes to a Music Career – Ask the Industry? explore real starting points into music, while Electronic Music, Production and Sound Engineering looks at how tracks are shaped and how artists and producers work together. Later, UK Music: Discover Careers in the Music Industry opens up the range of roles behind the scenes, and Contemporary Music Leaders: Skills for a Career in Music focuses on the practical skills needed to run projects, release work and build momentum.
Alongside live performances and open Q&A discussions, young people will gain insight into working life in music and the decisions that help people progress. In the afternoon, they explore the Creative Industries Expo, meet organisations and companies, try equipment and take part in a networking challenge designed to build confidence in starting conversations. The day concludes with information about bursaries offering mentoring, studio time and resources to support their next steps.
